For $3500... and while I've seen it on the road, I haven't been able to tell what condition the body is in.

Shitty ad, but worth a look. If it's not too rusty, $3500 is more than fair. Most driver quality Squares go for at least $5k here in CA. If it's a long time desert car, the chances of serious corrosion are greatly reduced. Usually rust is manifested mostly in the floors, and the ad says the pan is good, so here's hoping. Check the inside of the fenders at the bottoms, the rockers, inside the frunk, around all the glass, and the drip rails for rust.
I came home from the hospital in a '73 & have never not had an aircooled VW in my life, so I've always wanted one of my own. Someday...
Also, send me the Torchbug next so I can take it to the Nurburgring in a couple of weeks ;)
